چکیده

Abstract Introduction A number of factors have reportedly been associated with venous leg ulceration (VLU) however many these remain disputed. UK Biobank (UKB) is an electronic dataset that provides in-depth detail on the lives its participants. The aim this research to utilise UKB understand VLU. Methods Participants in historical or active were identified and age, sex comorbidity matched control group was formed. multivariate logistic regression used explore VLU significant expressed through odds ratios (OR). Mortality investigated using a Kaplan Meier plot log-rank test. Data analysis preformed R Studio Version 1.2.5033 Python 3.8.10. Results Factors included; male gender, older deprivation (OR 1.27), obesity 1.40), current smoking 1.21), immoderate alcohol intake 1.32), previous deep vein thrombosis 3.07), depression loneliness 1.21). Biochemical included low haemoglobin concentrations 1.50), circulating lymphocyte percentages 1.57), raised glycated (HbA1c) 2.92), c-reactive protein 1.41), cystatin C 1.11) Vitamin D levels 1.52). At median follow up 11.5 years, mortality participants 28%; significantly higher than controls (P < 0.001). Conclusion are comorbid poorer physical, social psychological wellbeing.

Venous Leg Ulceration

Venous leg ulcers are among the most common leg ulcerations. Advancing age, sex, race, phlebitis, family history, obesity, prolonged standing, and number of pregnancies are risk factors. Although the main pathogenetic mechanism is venous hypertension, leading to vein wall damage and thereby a cascade of events resulting in ulceration, there is no consensus about progression from venous hyperten...

Leg ulceration in venous disease.

We have given a brief summary of the scale of the problem caused by venous ulceration in the UK, and have then reviewed the various theories of causation, including a historical survey, and presented the evidence for and against the two main current theories of fibrin cuffs and white cell trapping. We also outline previous hypotheses of the aetiology of venous ulceration, including arteriovenou...

The number of people with leg ulceration in the UK is at least 730,000, which equals 1.5% of the adult population (Guest et al, 2017). The number of people diagnosed as suffering with venous leg ulceration is 278,000 (1 in 170 adults...

Lifestyle factors and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing in UK Biobank: Implications for epidemiological research

BACKGROUND The central role of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing in the diagnosis of prostate cancer leads to the possibility that observational studies that report associations between risk factors and prostate cancer could be affected by detection bias. This study aims to investigate whether reported risk factors for prostate cancer are associated with PSA testing in a large middle-aged...
